The Master of Science in Economics is a one-year Master programme, oriented towards students with broad interests in social and scientific matters who are capable of critical and creative thinking.

Which specialisations are available?

The Master of Science in Economics (60  ECTS) is a master’s programme in which you can freely ombine electives of different economic 'fields' or specialisations.

Why study Economics at KU Leuven?

The Master of Economics programme offers you an in-depth training in economic theory, econometrics and applied economics, which allows you to (autonomously) formulate answers to challenges that our society faces. The programme teaches students how to carry out an academic analysis of economic problems by means of economic research methods and techniques. Students can broaden and/or deepen their knowledge and skills by choosing electives from different economic fields. Choosing advanced core courses will prepare you for entrance into the Master of Advanced Studies in Economics.

Students with a degree obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community:

Direct admission

On the basis of the following degrees, or similar degrees, obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community:

  • Bachelor in de economische wetenschappen (Leuven)
  • Bachelor of Business Engineering (Brussel) (Track Economics)

Students who have obtained the degree of Master in de beleidseconomie with the track to the Master in de economische wetenschappen/Master of Economics at KU Leuven in the past, can contact the study career counselor.

After preparatory programme

Students who have obtained an academic Bachelor’s/Master's degree that does not grant direct access can gain access through the Voorbereidingsprogramma: Master in de economische wetenschappen/Master of Economics (Dutch programme).

Students with a degree obtained at an institution outside the Flemish Community:

Diploma requirements

Applicants should hold a university Bachelor's degree in Economics or Business Economics comparable to a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business Economics or Business Engineering from the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven, Campus Leuven. Students need a solid background in (i) microeconomics and macroeconomics, (ii) mathematics, statistics and econometrics, and (iii) other courses in economics. Comparability is evaluated by the faculty on basis of the required documents provided by the applicant through the official online application procedure.

Language requirements

An exemption from the proof of English proficiency by means of the above-mentioned tests is possible for applicants with a secondary education degree or a higher education degree earned in Australia, English speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the USA: the degree and transcripts suffice, provided they confirm that the entire study was completed in English.

Students who completed their studies in a satellite campus which is located in another country than the main campus of the university are not eligible for an exemption from the English language proficiency certificate.
