Southern Utah University’s Social Science bachelor’s degree program is a gateway to a wide variety of career possibilities. The program is closely linked with the education core curriculum and is ideal for students who wish to become teachers in a social science field such as geography, history, or psychology at the secondary level. The degree is also excellent preparation for a career in a non-governmental organization (NGO), a nonprofit, or even to enter the field of social services. Southern Utah University is the only university in the state of Utah to offer an avenue for social science students to complete coursework on campus along with one online course and be able to pursue social service licensure. Work experience is also required to pursue this licensure. Social Science classes at Southern Utah University are small and typically include 30 or fewer students. This allows professors to get to know their students well, work closely on skills development, and advise them on their career direction. When students graduate from the Social Science program, they will have the educational credits necessary to become a high school teacher or they may follow one of many diverse career options in the social science fields. Social Science Courses You May Take Teaching Social Science Subjects: Examine the concepts, challenges, methods and objectives for teaching subjects such as history, political science, sociology, and economics. Social Psychology: Receive a systematic introduction to both sociological and psychological theories. Language Arts and Social Science Curriculum and Instruction: Explore current curriculum standards and trends along with effective instruction methods.
