B.A./B.S. in Family Life and Human Development - Early Childhood Development

Students complete a core of classes common to both Family Services and Early Childhood Development. After that, each emphasis begins developing the unique set of professional skills needed to succeed in the chosen area of study. ​Both emphases involve extensive experiential learning. Since the Early Childhood Development program focuses on child development, child guidance, curriculum planning, and teaching young children, students observe and teach in the pre-school on campus. They also gain real world experience in a number of other settings serving young children. Family Services students gain experience working in community service projects and through program lab activities. Skills gained prepare students to work in a family or couples counseling environment, youth mentoring program, community center, or other such setting. Family Life and Human Development classes are small. They typically include between 15 and 30 students, which allows instructors to work with each student and help with their future career plans. By the time you complete your undergraduate degree in Family Life and Human Development, you will be well prepared to take the next step in your career, whether that be on to graduate school or into a rewarding position in the child development or family services field. Professors in the Family Life and Human Development degree program are well experienced in the field and include a therapist, licensed marriage and family counselor, and instructors who have worked extensively in early childhood development. Program graduates may sit for the Utah state social workers examination, if desired. The Family Life and Human Development program offers three degree options: a Bachelor’s in Family Services, a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development, and an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Development. There is also a minor available in both emphases. Human Development Through the Lifespan: Explore different aspects of human development throughout life focusing on the individual and the family. Family Processes and Theory: Discuss the process dynamics of the family with an eye toward researching, assessing, and ultimately helping families.
