The Department of English Language and Literature continues to contribute to the development of Al-Ahliyya Amman University, the first private university in Jordan, as a prestigious academic institution at the local and regional levels. The department offered a program in English Language and Literature in 1991 and offered a program in English Language and Translation in 2001. With its two programs,the department aims to build students cognitive skills as well as their analytical and critical abilities in English language, literature and translation. It also stimulates an effective engagement in constructive scientific research. The mission is to support basic thinking skills by deepening students understanding of the English language and literature, in addition to establishing the importance of critical and analytical reading, and writing skills through an academic environment which supports creativity that meets the needs of society, the market and the requirements of sustainable development.

Admission Requirements
Students applying for graduate work must submit documents of passing a language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, French, German, etc.). TOEFL (IBT) scores required for different subjects are as follows:
500 or equivalent for science specializations
400 or equivalent for humanities
550 or equivalent for English language specializations and joint programs
