MSS in Economics

Economics is a science that continuously evolves, encompassing new fields of application and specialization over time. The principles of economics are successfully applied to explain the behavioral patterns of different economic agents and used to formulate economic policies for solving many socio-economic problems of individuals and society. Notwithstanding the epistemological issues related to the objectives of studying economics, the behavioral value of applying the tools of economics to real-life problem solving can hardly be overstated. It is in the spirit of wide applicability and the ever-extending frontiers of economic knowledge that a degree program leading to a Master of Social Science in Economics is launched in the Department of Economics at East West University. Opening the Master of Social Science (MSS) program in Economics is rationalized on three grounds. First, an MSS degree in economics with a specialization in one of the most in-demand fields will give economics students a chance to equip themselves with full-fledged knowledge and training to face the challenges of modern society. Especially, they would be in a better position to compete on the job market with their enhanced skills, competence, and confidence attained in the program. Second, our objective is to produce a group of talented, hardworking, and enthusiastic economics graduates who can be accepted for admission in Ph.D. programs at North American and other foreign universities. Third, we aim to provide students in the MSS program with a major orientation to research activities. We are very much committed to the development of research capabilities among our students. The MSS program trains and makes students capable of carrying out research independently on topics ranging from theoretical contributions in economics to empirical evaluations of economic theories and policies. The curriculum of the MSS program at EWU has been designed with a view to making our graduates competent for pursuing higher studies abroad, carrying out research activities independently, and taking up challenging jobs at national and institutional organizations. The Department of Economics at EWU has a group of talented faculty members with MS and Ph.D. degrees from North American universities and a good reputation in research work.
