This bachelor’s degree in Italian and Mediterranean Studies provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary learning experience and is taught entirely in English. The programme allows you to explore Italy’s pivotal role in the Mediterranean through the lenses of language, literature, history, the arts, and intercultural and geopolitical relations.
The curriculum is designed to foster your critical and analytical skills through a multi-faceted approach:
History & Geopolitics: Uncover the political, social, and religious dynamics that have shaped Italy’s function as a crossroads of civilizations.
Literature & Digital Humanities: Study how the Mediterranean has been imagined and narrated-from canonical texts to travel literature-while using modern digital tools for textual analysis.
Anthropology & the Environment: Engage with pressing global challenges, including migration, deindustrialization, and overtourism, while exploring the relationship between communities and their environment.
Archaeology of the Sea: Discover symbols and ideas that traveled across the waves, viewing the sea not as a barrier, but as a shared, anthropized space of connection.
The primary goal is to provide students with a thorough understanding of Italian identity by highlighting its historical, cultural, and linguistic connections with other Mediterranean countries. Moving beyond the borders of the peninsula, the programme fosters critical and analytical skills regarding the Mediterranean, its history and literature, and its geopolitical and intercultural dynamics.
Standing out from other programmes in Italy and abroad, this degree is truly unique in the European academic landscape because it challenges the traditional “Italianistic” approach by placing Italian art, music, and culture in direct dialogue with the broader Mediterranean context. By transcending national boundaries, this degree offers an innovative approach to Italian studies, exploring Italy as the fulcrum of Mediterranean dynamics. This integration of language, history, and culture allows you to develop a broader, more contextualized vision of Italy and its evolving role in the global landscape.

There are so many, including top-notch teaching and research, eminently affordable tuition fees, a markedly global and globally-minded attitude and being located in the incomparable city of Venice. Read all about them here: www.unive.it/10goodreasons.
At Ca’ Foscari we believe that a university education needs to be international. This is why we offer a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programmes completely taught in English, which are popular with both international students and Italian students interested in a markedly international classroom experience. At the same time, to make sure you take full advantage of everything Italy has to offer, English-taught programmes include an Italian course to get you started on learning the local language.
Ca’ Foscari is a public, federally subsidized institution that prioritizes internationalisation and assuring affordable access to university education for everyone, even students coming from abroad:
● Students from Italy or European Union/Schengen Area countries pay tuition fees of around 2,400 euro per year for most bachelor’s degrees and around 2,600 euro per year for master’s degrees.
● Students from non-European OECD countries pay 2,100 euro per year for most bachelor’s degrees and 2,300 euro per year for master’s degrees.
● Students from the countries annually defined as developing nations by the Italian government pay 700 euros per year for most bachelor’s and all master’s degrees.
● Students from the remaining countries pay tuition fees of 1,300 euro per year for most bachelor’s and all master’s degrees.
To make choosing Ca’ Foscari even more manageable for high-achieving international students, the university offers renewable merit-based scholarships.
European and non-European students with an international qualification who wish to enrol in a bachelor's or master's degree programme at Ca' Foscari apply for admission via the online platform apply.unive.it.
After uploading the required documentation and completing the procedure, additional information and the outcome of the application will be communicated via email.
Studying the humanities at Ca’ Foscari is a particularly rich experience that unfolds against the backdrop of a city whose tangible and intangible cultural heritage have made it a UNESCO heritage site. Whether you are interested in history or archaeology, classics or anthropology, philosophy or art history – almost all fields in which Ca’ Foscari is world-ranked – the university explores all of these and more. But at Ca’ Foscari the humanities are also infused with a sense of innovation, with various minors and study programmes exploring the humanities through different eyes and in new guises, especially the fields of the digital and public humanities and environmental humanities.
