This programme is the ideal choice if you want to focus solely on music. It will allow you to specialise and develop your own musical interests and strengths whilst acquiring a solid, broad-based education in music theory and analysis, composition and performance studies, music history and culture, ethnomusicology, studio production and the business of music (including the opportunity to undertake a work placement).

Our BMus in Music offers the most in-depth study, allowing you to spend all your time specialising in music, with core and elective core modules in year 1 to provide you with a strong foundation upon which you will build your academic studies in future years. You also have the exclusive opportunity to take the major project Recital module in year 3 (comparable with Dissertations in other subjects), a variant of which is available only as a minor project on our BA programmes.

As well as studying a range of academic modules, you will also be encouraged to take full advantage of our school-led core ensembles, representing a wide range of musical repertoires and traditions, such as the Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphony Orchestra, Gamelan Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Lanyi (West African Ensemble), Symphony Chorus and the Pop Collective.

You’ll spend the third year of this 4-year course studying abroad, taking modules in music and other subjects where available. At your host university, you’ll learn different perspectives and approaches to studying music. You’ll complete your studies in Cardiff in the fourth year.

GCSE and other essential requirements

You must have or be working towards:
- English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade C/4 or an equivalent (such as A-levels). If you require a Student visa, you must ensure your language qualification complies with UKVI requirements.
- GCSE Maths grade C/4 or equivalent qualification (subject and grade). If you are taking A-level Maths (or equivalent), GCSE Maths is not required. Core Maths may also be accepted in place of GCSE Maths.

We do not accept Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects.
We will accept a combination of BTEC subjects, A-levels, and other qualifications, subject to the course specific grade and subject requirements.

Upon receipt of your UCAS application, we will invite you to attend one of our applicant days, typically held from November to February. These days give you an opportunity to attend talks, take part in workshops, and explore our facilities alongside the wider campus.

As part of your visit you will be invited to a meeting with members of our School team. This will be an opportunity for us to engage with you in a relaxed and informal conversation which is designed to help us get to know you better, to understand your musical interests, and for you to ask any questions you may have for us. During this meeting you will be invited either to perform a short piece of unaccompanied music on your principal instrument or voice or—for those whose interests lie more in composition or musicology—to bring along a composition for discussion, or suggest a musical work or topic about which to have an informal chat. This is followed by a short discussion about your musical interests. This element of the applicant day will be assessed and taken into consideration when we are making a decision on your application as a whole.

While the final decision on whether you receive an offer to study with us will be based on both your UCAS application and your individual meeting with us, we aim to make the whole experience as welcoming, enjoyable, and supportive as we possibly can.
