When you study a doctoral program in radio and space science, you get to cover a broad subject area that covers both processes and measurements from space. As a doctoral student, you also get to choose between different exciting specializations, such as astronomy, plasma physics, environmental science, and electrical engineering. With a doctorate in radio and space science, you gain in-depth knowledge with broad applications from measurement technology to studies of the Earth's climate. Read more in the study plan.

Description of subject

The subject Radio and Space Science is broad, covering both processes and measurements in and from space. Common for the subject is the use of electromagnetic waves as information carriers. The specialisations reflect the width of the subject with application from astronomy to studies of the Earth’s climate. Both passive (such as radiometry and spectroscopy) and active (such as radar) measurement techniques are utilised. The aim of the school is to give the student a fundamental understanding in one of the four specialities as well as skills in research methodology. Description of specialisations

The subject has four specialisations:
  • The specialisation Astronomy covers a wide range of topics from planetary atmospheres, through the early evolution of stars and planets, to late stages of stellar evolution and the structure and evolution of galaxies. Observations are made both at radio frequencies and in other parts of the spectrum.
  • The specialisation Plasma physics chiefly concerns processes around fusion energy production.
  • The specialisation Environmental science includes measurements and methods used to study the Earth’s environment providing input to policy makers.
  • The specialisation Electrical Engineering covers the development of advanced instrumentation and techniques used to further advance the subject.

Admission Requirements

General entry requirements

To be qualified for admission to Radio and space science the student must have earned a degree at the second-cycle level. The orientation of the student’s degree shall also have a sufficiently close connection to the subject of the doctoral programme. Equivalent requirements apply to individuals who have taken their first degree in a country other than Sweden. The examiner, in consultation with the principal supervisor, shall assess whether the applicant has the requisite capacity to successfully complete the doctoral programme.
