About Echahid Cheikh Larbi Tebessi University - Tebessa
Echahid Cheikh Larbi Tebessi University (also known as Larbi Tebessi University) is a public higher education institution located in the wilaya of Tébessa, Algeria. The university was officially established by Executive Decree No. 09-08 of January 4, 2009, marking its promotion to full university status.
The origins of the institution date back to 1985, when the National Institutes of Higher Education were created in Tébessa, offering programs in Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, and Mining. These early foundations represented the first stage in the university’s development and laid the groundwork for its academic expansion.
The second major phase occurred in 1992 with the establishment of the Sheikh Arabi Tebbsi University Center, in accordance with Executive Decree No. 92-297 of September 27, 1992. The center was named in honor of the renowned scholar and native of Tébessa, Sheikh Arabi Tebbsi, symbolizing the values of knowledge, intellectual contribution, and national struggle associated with his legacy.
As part of higher education reforms, Executive Decree No. 06-272 of August 16, 2006 introduced a new organizational structure for university centers. This reform led to the reorganization of administrative units and the redistribution of faculties, departments, and institutes.
The decisive milestone in the institution’s history came on October 12, 2008, during the official opening of the 2008–2009 academic year. At a ceremony held at the University of Tlemcen, the President of the Republic at the time, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, announced the promotion of the University Center of Tébessa to a full-fledged university. This announcement represented a turning point, enabling significant advancements in organizational, academic, and scientific structures.
Today, Echahid Cheikh Larbi Tebessi University continues to experience substantial development, strengthening its scientific competencies and institutional capacities. These advancements allow the university to compete with leading national institutions while enhancing the quality of education, research, training, and academic supervision across its various disciplines and fields of study.
