At Edinburgh Napier University, we aim to be recognised as a university that is professional, ambitious, innovative and inclusive, and the School of Health and Social Care aspires to provide you with an excellent, personalised student experience. In our dealings with you, we will act with respect and integrity. We will create an environment to enable you to feel proud to be a student of the University, to feel confident and supported while being academically challenged to further and deepen your knowledge and skills. A wide consultation process was undertaken to ascertain feedback from all stakeholders (including current and former BSc Nursing Studies students, registered nurses, nurse managers, nurse educators, other healthcare personnel and patients) to enable the BSc Nursing Studies course to be evaluated and revised to ensure it meets the needs of registered nurses working in contemporary healthcare practice.

As this course is delivered fully online (part-time), you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in your career with minimum disruption to your work and personal life.

This course is designed specifically for registered nurses who wish to 'top up' their academic qualifications to a BSc Nursing Studies award. It acknowledges the diversity of learning needs of professionals in the workplace, particularly those who are working in healthcare environments and studying concurrently. It will deepen your knowledge of evidence-based practice and develop a critical approach to integrated healthcare. You then can effectively apply the theory to your own nursing practice.

You will study subjects that are relevant to contemporary nursing practice, and you will be provided with learning opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills to allow you to progress in your chosen sphere of nursing practice.

The online materials have been designed to support you to study at a place and pace which suits your needs. Depending on your previous level of study, you will complete either five or six modules and complete the course in 12–28 months. Where available, a maximum of two modules can be completed in each trimester.

Within each trimester, whilst there is flexibility to work through the material at your own pace you need to be aware of the assessment dates as there is no flexibility in these.

Engaging in the online learning materials and participating in the online discussions will enable you to exchange knowledge with fellow participants. While you'll manage your own learning, you'll be provided with guidance on how best to work with the online materials and on the importance of reflection in order to meet the course objectives.

In addition to the module materials, you'll receive full support from module leaders and the programme leader, full access to our online library support, as well as being able to contact our dedicated administration team, should you have any queries.

For the award of the BSc Nursing Studies, you must successfully pass all modules.
