Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking is dedicated to the visual exploration of contemporary issues. The area supports a broad array of studio practices and interests. In offering a B.F.A. concentration as well as support courses for other disciplines and degrees in the School, it strives to contribute to cultural dialogue, enhance visual literacy, and encourage the development of individual perception, initiative, and artistic decision making. The Welch School of Art and Design does not have a portfolio requirement for entrance into its foundation level program. Upon completing foundation-level course work and 2 introductory classes in the concentration, prospective students are required to apply for acceptance into the Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking concentration with a portfolio. The portfolio consisting of approximately 20 artworks is reviewed by the full-time faculty in the area. Accepted students take upper-level courses that include media specific courses and selected topics classes. These courses are followed by a Directed Study sequence that leads the student to develop his or her own unique emphasis in Drawing and Painting or Printmaking. Faculty encourage students to explore individual creativity, to embrace a visual language, and to use this language to find their own artistic voice within the context of an evolving artistic history. The faculty composed of professionals with a variety of backgrounds, interests, expertise, and teaching methodologies, is uniquely skilled in responding to student artistic needs. As part of the senior portfolio courses, each student in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking take Portfolio I and II in which they meet with a team of DPP faculty for intense and extended critiques over two semesters in order to complete a final portfolio as a culminating experience and for their senior exhibition. Drawing and Painting Emphasis The BFA Drawing and Painting Emphasis offers courses in a number of traditional and exploratory drawing and painting approaches including life drawing, drawing research, water-based media, oil-based media and a variety of selected topics courses. Directed Study in Drawing and Painting is an advanced laboratory for developing a more individual body of work within a studio classroom context. The Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking concentration is dedicated to the visual exploration of contemporary issues. Printmaking Emphasis The BFA Printmaking Emphasis offers courses in a number of traditional and alternative printmaking techniques including etching, lithography, screen-printing, monoprinting, photo-transfer processes, block printing, book arts, papermaking, and computer based imaging. The print shop, book and paper making facilities are frequented by photo, graphic design, textile and drawing and painting majors as well as printmaking majors, creating a lively atmosphere and interchange between disciplines. Students also gain the experience of organizing events and marketing through their involvement with the student organization, The Printer’s Workshop. The group organizes exhibitions of student work in the Atlanta Community, procures funding for travel to conferences and participates in the management of the student-run art space, Cage Space Gallery. Students within the club are responsible for managing a budget, participating in fundraising through one and sometimes two annual sales of work and often coordinating visiting printmaking artist workshops and lectures.
