Mathematics is the language of our universe, providing a common link to all scientific and technological disciplines. Using the knowledge of mathematics and statistics, graduates interpret, understand, and solve global problems. Applied mathematics is the use of mathematical tools to solve real-world problems. Mathematicians can create modeling programs for biological systems; develop secure codes for the U.S. Department of Defense, or use probability and statistics to determine if business ventures will be profitable. With a degree in mathematics, your job options are infinite. You can work for software developers, be an actuary or a statistician, teach elementary to college students, or even become an astronaut. Most students pursue their study of mathematics through a differential equations course and then elect courses in specialized areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, and statistics. Supporting study in technical electives is required from other departments. Such study includes analytical mechanics, communication theory, control theory, and others. Your classes, for the most part, will be held in the Rolla Building. You will be provided data processing and computational services to solve complex problems through the computer facilities. This program is focused on Applied Analysis.
