Successful completion of this full-time professional training programme doctorate will enable you to become a registered educational psychologist in the UK. It is accredited by the British Pyschological Society (BPS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Counci (HCPC).
This is an exciting, challenging and creative programme.
This programme will prepare you:
- to work as a registered applied Practitioner Educational Psychologist in Local Authorities (LAs)
- to work well in the changing landscape of services for children and young people
You’ll benefit from:
- theoretically grounded training in applied psychology practice and research.
- excellent collaboration between the Local Authority Educational Psychology Services in the region. The North-Eastern Principal Educational Psychologists’ group helps to develop and improve the Programme. This group commissions research conducted by year one students each year.
- a diversity of well-supervised placements in Local Authority settings in the North-East. Educational psychologists provide teaching on the Programme and placement supervision.

Admission Requirements
- a 2:1 honours degree, or equivalent, in psychology, which is eligible for Graduate Basis for Registration of the British Psychological Society. Where a 2:1 or above has not been achieved in psychology at Bachelors Level, an appropriate psychology Masters Degree.
- completed an approved conversion course or Master's degree, which is eligible for Graduate Basis for Registration of the British Psychological Society
You also need to gain at least one year of relevant, paid work experience at the point of application. Work experience should have:
- focussed on children and young people's education development and psychological well-being
- given insight and understanding into educational systems in the UK
- led to ideas on how psychology may be applied to support positive outcomes for Children and young people.
To be eligible for this programme you must be a UK resident.
If you’re an applicant from outside of the UK, you must:
- be living in the UK at the time of application and be able to provide proof of residency
- have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three years preceding the start of the course
- be eligible to work in England for the duration of the course and for at least two years afterwards
The entry requirements for initial training in educational psychology can be found on the AEP website. We do not take self funding students. Those applying need to ensure that they meet the residency criteria in order to be eligible for funding
