About our Early Childhood and Special Education Program Niagara University's College of Education offers a master of science in education, early childhood education and special education that leads to initial and professional New York state teacher certifications in both early childhood education (birth through grade 2) and students with disabilities (birth through grade 2). Graduates of the program will be able to serve as teachers, leaders and directors of early childhood programs, development specialists, teacher educators, etc., in a variety of early childhood and educational settings. The Importance of Early Childhood and Special Education Teachers Early childhood and early childhood special educators in today's world are dedicated professionals who want to make a difference in the lives of young children. They appreciate and embrace the diverse range of the needs of their students and families. They remain lifelong learners as they seek out and implement validated practices that are supported by research in the field. They are able to work effectively within a variety of settings, situations and personalities. Early childhood and early childhood special education teachers are able to assess and evaluate student progress; make appropriate accommodations and deliver individualized instruction that is based upon each student's individual educational program. Finally, early childhood and early childhood special educators are constant agents of positive change in an exciting field. Why Niagara University's Early Childhood and Special Education Program? Assists teachers in the enrichment of lives through programs in the liberal arts and through career preparation that is informed by the Catholic and Vincentian traditions. Aids teachers in the understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of child development and the education of young children. Encourages teachers to focus on an early childhood and early childhood special education as an interdisciplinary, collaborative and systems-oriented profession. Empowers teachers to develop the skills and dispositions of outstanding practitioners as defined by our values and those of accreditation and review boards. Prepares teachers by meeting the NAEYC and CEC standards for advanced programs.

If you have successfully completed a degree equivalent to the baccalaureate degree in the United States, you are considered a graduate applicant at NU. Other English Language requirements: A TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper exam) is required for admission. Students may take the TOEFL PBT (at least 550 score) until it is discontinued in their area and submit the scores for two years after the test date. If you attend high school where courses are taught in English, an SAT may be submitted in place of the TOEFL or IELTS.
