The study of the past involves mastering complex bodies of knowledge and questioning widely held assumptions. In an electronic age, the ability to carry out research, to evaluate evidence, to think creatively and to argue effectively is more essential than ever. To obtain a Major in History, students must complete at least forty-two credit hours (42.0) in history. The Department's faculty members have expertise in American, East Asian, Canadian, European, and Latin American History, the quality of which has been recognized through an array of fellowships, grants, prizes and awards. Nine current department members have received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), some on several occasions.
