What does it mean to major in Classics? Classics is the study of ancient Greek and Roman culture. Classics scholars examine the life, culture, language, government, and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome to understand the ancient world and to understand how it has influenced cultures throughout history.Students who major in Classics are fascinated by ancient cultures. They like to analyze and compare them with their own culture. Classics majors gain a broad understanding of Greek and Roman culture by taking Classical Civilization (CLC) courses in ancient history, mythology, ancient literature in translation, art, and archaeology. By studying the ancient Greek and Latin languages, majors develop a deep appreciation of the grammatical structures of English, while at the same time building their English vocabulary. Overall, Classics majors strengthen their ability to think independently and communicate effectively. Why is the University of Mississippi a good place to study Classics? Faculty members in Classics have earned their degrees at some of the best American programs in Classics and Classical Archaeology: Bryn Mawr College, the University of Michigan, Princeton, and UCLA. They are active in their fields, publishing frequently and presenting papers at American and international conferences. The department’s new quarters in Bryant Hall place it at the very center of the campus, with state-of-the-art classrooms and plenty of room for studying in a beautiful and peaceful environment. The Eta Sigma Phi Classics honorary society for undergraduates provides opportunities for social and cultural activities. The University of Mississippi Museum houses the David M. Robinson Collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, one of the finest collections of its kind in the United States. Covering the 1000-year period from 800 B.C. to around 300 A.D., the collection contains Greek and Roman sculpture, Greek decorated pottery, inscriptions, architectural fragments, inscribed Sumerian clay tablets, small artifacts in terracotta and bronze, Roman copies of Greek art works, ancient surgical instruments, and Greek and Roman coins. What can UM Classics majors do after graduation? Archivist, cultural affairs officer, travel consultant, foreign service officer, museum curator, immigration officer, foreign student advisor, international trade specialist, teacher, minister, lawyer, librarian.
