This programme combines study of the English language in social contexts equally with study of language in literary texts, looking at the structure & history of the language, its development and use in various contexts, media and types of literature. Why Study This Course? Our Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics offers you a thorough grounding in the study of language as a social phenomenon; we have research expertise in sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics as well as an internationally-acknowledged strength in English Language Teaching (ELT). Our Department of English Literature offers expertise in a wide range of literary genres and periods, from medieval romance to contemporary and creative writing. This allows you to tailor your course to meet your own enthusiasms. At Reading, our teaching is based on small-group seminar discussion, and all members of the department, from professors to new lecturers, teach at every level. You will be given support and training for undertaking fieldwork, and we will help you to develop transferrable skills in problem-solving, time-management, data analysis and undertaking research. You will have the benefit of our experience and expertise, and become part of the conversation about the ways that English Studies is developing. Throughout your studies, you will be supported by your personal tutor, and regular student-staff consultation. We offer a small and friendly environment in which you will be able to thrive. After the Course The interdisciplinary nature of English Language and Literature produces graduates who are prepared for a wide range of professions. This typically includes teaching in the UK state sector (primary, secondary and in further education), teaching English language overseas (e.g. in Japan), publishing (Oxford University Press), the media (the BBC, ITV) and further study (MA, PhD). Recent graduates from Reading have gone on to work for the NHS, Royal Bank of Scotland, the British Medical Association, Pilat Media, Modus Publicity, local councils and schools. Many of our graduates also progress on to higher level study and in particular PGCEs and the MSc in Speech and Language Therapy. Our innovative placement modules and Professional Track programme will ensure that you have the ‘complete package’ that employers are looking for: a good degree, workplace skills and experience.
