Wayne State's master of arts in public history (MAPH) trains its students to intepret the past for public audiences in diverse settings and professions. Public historians work in museums, historical societies, libraries and archives, public policy institutes, parks and recreation departments, tourism, historic preservation and cultural resource management, nonprofit and for-profit organizations, at all levels of government, and as historical consultants. There is no better place to study public history than in the heart of Detroit, where our program partners with cultural institutions to provide internships and other hands-on opportunities for our students. We now offer courses both at our Midtown campus and online, making earning your master's degree more accessible than ever. Part-Time option for this program is also available.

The Department normally considers only applicants whose undergraduate grade point is at least 3.00 overall and at least 3.25 in a minimum of eighteen semester credits in history and related subjects at the advanced undergraduate level. Applicants should have or be in the process of acquiring relevant foreign language preparation to enter the area in which they wish to study. The Department requires that all applicants submit a letter of intent, a research paper as evidence of writing skills, a copy of scores from the Graduate Record Exam general test (GRE average: 305 for verbal and quantitative and a score of at least 3.5 for analytical writing), at least two letters of recommendation from former instructors, and provide copies of transcripts from each college or university previously attended.
