The University of Piraeus was founded as School of Industrial Studies in 1938 by the Association of Industrialists and Craftsmen, in accordance with the Law 5197/1931 and the Mandatory Law 28/1936, in association with the Greek Federation of Public Limited Companies intending to provide economic, legal and technical education to industrial executives. In 1945 it was renamed to Higher School of Industrial Studies and its purpose was that of the systematic theoretical and practical training of administrators. In 1958, it became the Graduate School of Industrial Studies of Piraeus and in 1989 received its current name. The following years, its Departments and study programs gradually started to operate. The University continues to expand, with the addition of courses in close collaboration with the private and public sector. Now, it has four Schools and ten Departments, dedicated to economics, business and international studies, maritime and industrial studies, finance and statistics, information and communication technologies.
Its vision is to be an Institution of international prestige in the modern academic map and to be recognized for excellence in education and research, production, dissemination and application of cutting-edge knowledge, leadership in shaping values and primacy in addressing scientific, social and economic challenges. Its mission is to educate and cultivate the spirit of young people, to produce new knowledge, to promote the values of freedom and democracy, to support the industry and the market and to shape policy making. The University aims at (a) producing and transmitting knowledge through research and teaching and preparing the next generation of the contributors in all areas of economic and social life, (b) providing a high level of higher education and life-long learning with modern teaching methods, in accordance with internationally recognized quality criteria, (c) promoting excellence in education and its utilization to develop scientists with values, (d) developing and supporting research to meet the challenges in cutting-edge areas, (e) contributing to the advancement of entrepreneurship and the development of innovation, (f) promoting extroversion and cooperation with academic, research, social and other bodies, for advancing both, the University and the society, (g) functioning as a pole of reference, a field of fruitful dialogue and free development of ideas for the local and national economic and social ecosystem.

The internal quality assurance system of the University, accredited by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education in October 2019, covers a range of principles, criteria and regulations whose proper operation is monitored periodically. It is based on a solid quality management system which consists in the existence of organization, logistical means and human resources recruited to achieve the maintenance and continuous improvement of the quality of the characteristics of the services provided. The ultimate goal is to meet the expectations and requirements of the recipients of the educational products produced by the university.
