Informatics

The Department of Informatics at the University of Piraeus was established by a Government Gazette in 1991 and has been operating since 1992, making it one of the oldest IT departments in Greece. The Department of Informatics at the University of Piraeus is one of the leading informatics departments in Greece, with international recognition and a wide range of activities. The department has 21 professors of various ranks, a particularly high number of researchers, scientists, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, as well as a significant number of temporary and external collaborators. Our department has achieved a significant position as a research partner in international scientific developments, and it is important to note that 40% of our professors belong to the top 2% of professors worldwide, according to the list published annually by Stanford University.

The main pillars of the Department are education and research. Education is provided at three levels. The first level is undergraduate studies, with students admitted through the country's national examinations, leading to a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science.

The Department's undergraduate program provides solid training in all areas of modern computer science in line with current developments in computer science worldwide. In the third year of study, students can choose one of three specializations:

1. Software Technology and Intelligent Systems,

2. Information Systems and Services, and

3. Networks and Computing Systems.

which will provide the necessary and critical undergraduate-level specialization that will make the Department's students competitive in the job market and ready to meet the modern demands of the scientific field of Informatics. 

The Department of Informatics aspires to fulfill the following objectives to the greatest extent possible:

•    Alignment with current international trends in the field of Informatics and the needs of the job market,

•    Defining the Department's unique identity by establishing guidelines that adequately address, at the undergraduate level, cutting-edge areas of Information Technology,

•    Creation of a "nursery" for new scientists by incorporating modern cognitive subjects and courses in combination with the Department's already established Postgraduate Study Programs.

The first four (4) semesters (1st and 2nd year) are common to all students of the Department. In the last four (4) semesters (3rd and 4th year), the three directions are established. Specifically, in order to obtain the degree, students must complete eight (8) semesters of study and accumulate a total of 240 credit units (ECTS). According to the current curriculum, forty-eight (48) courses are required to obtain a degree, in addition to foreign language courses.
