The Department of Statistics and Insurance Science is one of the oldest departments of the University of Piraeus. The Department covers two fundamental scientific fields, Statistics and Insurance Science, both of which are rooted in Mathematics and, specifically, Probability Theory.

Statistics is a science applied across every scientific discipline that utilizes quantitative or qualitative data; its purpose is data collection, analysis, and the development of models for decision-making and drawing conclusions. Medicine, Genetics, Economic and Social Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, modern technologies, and any other field involving measurements and data observation rely—to a small or (very) large extent—on the application of Statistics. Understanding and applying Statistics at the level taught in the Department's undergraduate program requires familiarity with the concepts and techniques of Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Probability Theory.

Insurance Science encompasses everything related to the field of Insurance, from Actuarial Science and Risk Management to practical and economic issues concerning insurance and the insurance market. Actuarial Science and Risk Management, as taught in the Department's curriculum, are also based on Calculus and Probability Theory.

The Department's undergraduate curriculum is revised regularly and is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge in both fields through theory and practice, as well as the use of computers and specialized software. Thus, students acquire the necessary tools to either enter the labor market or pursue postgraduate studies in programs related to the Department's subject areas. The level of knowledge provided is high, meeting the standards of both the domestic and international job markets.
