The four-year IMD program is aimed at students who are both artistically inclined and technologically adept and who are interested in all aspects of digital media. You will acquire the tools you need to take an idea or a problem and advance it through the entire process from concept to pre-production, production and post-production. The program provides you with a multidisciplinary education through courses in computer animation, visual effects, game design and development, graphic design and human-computer interaction. The program is then further enhanced with courses in science, mathematics, business and social science. You will graduate fully-equipped to work in and shape the digital world of the future.

Program Details

Animation is imagination come to life. A great movie can whisk you away to an entirely different universe. A great video game allows you to have an entirely different identity. And a great website can do almost anything you want it to. But taking a creative vision from concept to reality is a massive undertaking—and students in the Interactive Media and Design program learn the skills they need to launch a career in the fast-paced and ever-evolving digital media production industry.

Streams

Students earn a Bachelor of Information Technology from Carleton and an Advanced Diploma of Applied Arts from Algonquin College. You will develop a broad background in Interactive Multimedia and Design and have the option of specializing in one of the following streams:

·  Animation and Visual Effects:  Emphasizing skills in 3D animation, compositing and visual storytelling.

·  Game Design and Development:  Emphasizing skills in design, development and implementation of interactive digital games, integrating principles of game mechanics, storytelling and user experience.

·  Web and User Interfaces/Experience:  Emphasizing skills in user-friendly, accessible digital interfaces and experiences, integrating web development, human-computer interaction and user-centred design principles.

Labs and Facilities

The curriculum blends technical and academic learning, with courses in computer animation, computer programming, visual effects, game design and development, graphic and web design and human-computer interaction. Interactive Multimedia and Design students use the same suite of software they’ll use in the workforce. You’ll have access to laboratories with industry-standard technologies, like the motion capture studio and games and graphics lab.

Co-op

Carleton offers students a paid Co-op option with work terms of 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 months. Work Experience Ottawa is home to one of Canada’s largest concentrations of government agencies and high-tech companies.
