We see an opportunity of the rising heritage sector, and we capitalize the strengths of the University’s academic tradition on business and management studies as well as the fast-growing disciplines in art, design and cultural and creative industries for creating the Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management (MA-CHM).

It is designed for tangible and intangible cultural heritage, conservation and value creation, operation, management and public education of the Revitalisation Scheme. MA-CHM also introduces the “Competence Framework for Cultural Heritage Management” launched by UNESCO in 2018. It is specially tailored for professionals in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA) who intend to engage in related industries and enhance their knowledge on cultural relics conservation, providing a learning channel for relevant management and application knowledge.

Professor Desmond Hui, MA-CHM programme director and Head of the Department of Art and Design, said, “The rich cultural heritage of Hong Kong and GBA has attracted the attention of the public and the media in recent years. Cultural heritage is an important asset for tourism and a key to sustainable development. Therefore, HSUHK specially designed this programme to cultivate relevant talents.”

We are also delighted to welcome Prof. Richard Engelhardt, former Regional Advisor for Culture for Asia and the Pacific of UNESCO, to be the adjunct professor and member of the programme development committee, who will also be responsible for part of the teaching and research work.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to:

  • Impart advanced knowledge of cultural and heritage theories and management knowledge for professional developments;
  • Acquire business and management skills and design-thinking tools for the value creation and enterprising development of cultural heritage;
  • Develop in students the ability to create and innovate new models and practices for the management of tangible and intangible cultural heritage;
  • Enhance students’ ability to apply advanced knowledge of cultural heritage management to address contemporary issues in the field;
  • Cultivate among students a strong sense of sustainability, responsibility and high commitment as responsible stakeholders of organisations.
