When comparing study abroad options, rankings and globally recognised rating systems like QS Stars are an incredibly useful tool to identify excellent academic institutions. But what do universities actually do to be recognised as excellent?
European University Cyprus’ MD Medicine programme has been internationally recognised for its quality of education. With teaching offered across two locations (Nicosia, Cyprus and Frankfurt, Germany), students receive a comprehensive medical education that prepares them for professional success around the world.
This strength has been recognised by the QS Stars rating system, which awarded the programme five stars for its strength and competitiveness. To learn more about how you build an excellent, internationally recognised medical programme, we spoke to the Dean of EUC’s School of Medicine, Professor Elizabeth Johnson.
Why has EUC become a top destination for medical studies in Europe?
In recent years, European University Cyprus has become a leading choice for students who want to study medicine in Europe.
With over 12,500 students from across Europe, Asia, Canada, and the US, we’ve built a strong reputation for academic excellence, innovation and clinical training.
Our medical programme combines theoretical knowledge with real-world practice from the very first year, ensuring that graduates are confident and competent when they enter the healthcare profession.
What is the School of Medicine’s vision?
Our mission is clear: to create the medical leaders of tomorrow by providing an education that combines academic excellence, cutting-edge technologies and practical experience.
We prepare our students not only to practice medicine, but to face the evolving global challenges of healthcare with compassion, innovation and scientific integrity.
Why should students be interested in the Frankfurt campus?
The establishment of our Frankfurt campus marks a major step in EUC’s global outreach.
Frankfurt sits at the crossroads of Europe and offers our students unique clinical and professional opportunities within Germany’s advanced healthcare network. It reflects our commitment to accessible, high-quality medical education across Europe.
How does EUC integrate theory and clinical practice?
Education at EUC doesn’t just prepare doctors, it prepares healthcare leaders. Through strategic collaborations with hospitals and research centres worldwide, we ensure that our students experience medicine as it is practiced in different cultural and professional contexts.
What makes EUC’s student community unique?
Diversity is one of our greatest strengths. At EUC, and especially at our Frankfurt campus, students from over 30 nationalities study, collaborate and grow together.
This multicultural environment enhances learning, fosters empathy and equips future doctors with the interpersonal skills needed to care for patients from all backgrounds.
Medicine today is global and so must be medical education. Our students leave EUC not just as competent clinicians, but as culturally aware professionals ready to serve diverse communities around the world.
What are the future plans for innovation?
We are entering an exciting new chapter. This year, we introduced four new programmes in Medical and Health Sciences – at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels – to expand our interdisciplinary research and academic offerings.
By 2028, our Frankfurt campus will undergo a major expansion, featuring new academic buildings and programmes, advanced research facilities and enhanced student spaces.
This growth underscores our vision to make EUC a leading centre for medical education and research in Central Europe.
Our vision for the School of Medicine is simple: excellence with purpose. We want our graduates to stand out, not only for their knowledge and skills, but for their integrity, empathy and leadership.
The expansion of our Frankfurt campus represents more than growth; it represents our commitment to shaping a new generation of doctors who will make a global impact.
