This Theatre, Performance and Critical Culture MA allows you to study at the heart of London’s Theatreland. You’ll be introduced to various theatre and performance theories, from contemporary theatres and live art performances to avant-garde dramas and political interventions; site-specific events, choreographies and compositions; and the world of cultural tourism and West End spectacles.

During this master’s in Theatre, Performance and Critical Culture, you’ll explore the impact of society, both specific to theatre histories and ongoing wider political agency, focusing on social movements such as Black Lives Matter, MeToo and the climate emergency. You’ll also get to shape your curriculum with optional modules, including the performance-research-based Performance Lab in the specially restored Anatomy Museum & Theatre on the Strand.

Key benefits
  • Build a strong research foundation in theatre and performance studies.
  • Tailor your syllabus with two optional modules drawn from across English and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, including the flagship Performance Lab that culminates in a solo or collaborative research-led festival performance.
  • Learn from King’s dynamic intellectual community and a wealth of guest speakers and artist residents.
  • Enjoy the abundance of cultural opportunities and the world-class research libraries on your doorstep.
  • Develop a unique body of work – leading to a substantial dissertation supported by leading experts in the field.
  • Hone your skills for a vibrant career in the cultural, performance and arts sectors, as well as in further research and education.
