Through this program, students will discover the relationship between the great works of classical antiquity and literature from around the globe. Students will study the ancient world and its legacy, with options from the Bronze Age to Modern Greece. Comparative Literature is the study of literature beyond the borders of one particular country or cultural group, and the study of the interactions between literature and other forms of human expression, including the arts, the sciences, and cultural artefacts of all kinds. The first year of study will consist of modules covering conceptions, methods and theoretical foundations of Comparative Literature; providing students with a rounded introduction to the subject; developing their analytical skills and introducing them to advanced historical theory and methodology. Students will similarly be introduced to foundational concepts and methods in the area of Classical Studies, and will have the opportunity to take Greek and/or Latin language modules at a level appropriate to their prior knowledge. In the second and third years, students will study further required and optional modules, giving them the freedom to develop a study pathway that reflects their interests. Students may choose to study abroad in the second semester of the second year or for the whole of their second year. In the final year, students are required to complete a 10,000-word dissertation on an approved subject of their choice and emphasising self-directed research.
