This programme equips you for careers in actuarial science, financial engineering, or quantitative risk management. You will learn to build risk models, apply quantitative tools, and report analyses on key contemporary issues.

What is the focus of the programme?

The Master of Science in Actuarial and Financial Engineering (120 ECTS) is a multidisciplinary master’s programme designed to equip students with both theoretical insight and practical skills in five key domains. These areas form the backbone of the curriculum and reflect the diverse challenges and opportunities in the field:

  • Actuarial Engineering: Life, Health and Pensions
  • Actuarial Engineering: Data Science Methods
  • Risk Engineering
  • Financial Engineering
  • Regulations

Throughout the programme, students are immersed in these core areas via its core courses. Elective courses offer the flexibility to specialise further, allowing students to tailor their learning path to their interests and career aspirations.

Why study Actuarial and Financial Engineering at KU Leuven?

The Actuarial and Financial Engineering programme offers advanced training in the business domain of insurance. Mathematical and statistical techniques are studied to be able to manage risks, model assets and liabilities and analyse timely topics in actuarial and financial engineering. These skills, combined with a foundation in regulation and professional skills, including reporting and ethics, result in a strong ability to optimise business processes.

The electives include courses offered by our partner institutions Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). As such, an exchange within Belgium while studying at KU Leuven can be realised. Furthermore, an exchange abroad during the second master's year is possible.

This programme is also available in Dutch.
