Overview

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) program at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) is an advanced postgraduate program designed to foster specialized research, critical analysis, and technical expertise in the study of biological macromolecules, cellular mechanisms, and the molecular basis of health and disease.

The program extends over 2-3 semesters (3 for Thesis group and 2 for Non-Thesis group) and consists of 40 credit hours. The M.Sc. program emphasizes advanced experimental design, structural biology, gene regulation, and biomedical applications. Theory courses are offered during the first two semesters, while the third semester is dedicated for thesis work. Non-Thesis group students are offered the opportunity of internship in a biomedical research institute, pharmaceutical company, or advanced diagnostics laboratory.

Program Majors and Research Areas

Students can specialize or conduct research in any of the following advanced BMB fields:

  • Structural Biology and Proteomics

  • Genomics, Epigenetics, and Gene Regulation

  • Advanced Metabolic Engineering and Cellular Signaling

  • Cancer Biology and Molecular Pathogenesis

  • Virology, Immunology, and Molecular Diagnostics

  • Enzyme Kinetics and Protein Engineering

  • Bioinformatics and Computational Biochemistry

Program Outcomes (POs)

Upon successful completion of the M.Sc. in BMB, graduates will be able to:

  • PO1: Advanced Knowledge: Demonstrate comprehensive and specialized knowledge of complex molecular mechanisms, biochemical pathways, and the structural basis of biological function.

  • PO2: Research and Innovation: Design, execute, and interpret independent, original research in biochemistry or molecular biology that contributes new knowledge or methodological advancements.

  • PO3: Technical Proficiency: Attain mastery in advanced biochemical separation, spectroscopic analysis, molecular cloning, and cell culture techniques relevant to the field.

  • PO4: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking: Analyze intricate biological data and scientific literature to model molecular interactions and propose optimized solutions for fundamental or applied biomedical problems.

  • PO5: Communication and Leadership: Demonstrate effective scientific communication (written and oral) through peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and function effectively in multidisciplinary research teams.

  • PO6: Professional Ethics and Responsibility: Apply high ethical standards, rigor, and safety protocols in all laboratory work and research dissemination, especially concerning human samples and genetic data.

  • PO7: Continuous Learning: Engage in self-directed, lifelong learning, rapidly integrating emerging technologies (e.g., CRISPR, Next-Gen Sequencing) into research and professional practice.

Expected Graduate Attributes

Graduates of the M.Sc. in BMB program will demonstrate:

  • Depth of knowledge in the molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease.

  • Research competence in designing and executing sophisticated, hypothesis-driven biochemical and molecular experiments.

  • Professional readiness for high-level research positions in academic institutions, R&D departments of pharmaceutical/biotech companies, and clinical research organizations.

  • Innovation and creativity in developing novel assays, molecular tools, or diagnostic methods.

  • Global adaptability and commitment to rigorous, ethical, and cutting-edge biomedical research standards.
