Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University gained full independent university status in 2009 and was named Al Kharj University. Prior to that, its campuses were colleges under the King Saud University. Later, in 2015 the university was renamed Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University.

The university is organised into four different types of academic colleges: scientific colleges, health colleges, humanities colleges, and community colleges.
