The B.S. program prepares students for immediate entry into a career in geology or for graduate studies. Career opportunities for geologists in industry and government include environmental and geohazard assessment, evaluation of waste disposal sites, groundwater modeling, and exploration for natural resources. The B.S. program is excellent preparation for graduate study and ultimately for a career in research, teaching, industry, or government. The B.S. program includes an intensive 4-6 week summer course in Field Geology, typically taken in the summer following the Junior or Senior year. Program goals: BA students will acquire a solid foundation in the Earth and Environmental Sciences through classroom instruction, laboratory and field work, and will be provided with opportunities for undergraduate research. The BA degree requires slightly fewer credit hours than the B.S. degree to allow students sufficient flexibility for electives outside the major to pursue a double major or to complete courses required to continue in law, medicine or education. Students intending graduate studies in the geosciences are encouraged to complete a BS. Careers: Students who major in geology go on to further academic study at advanced levels and to careers in the private sector, government/public service and non-profit organizations. Our alumni have found employment with NASA, the U. S. Geological Survey, British Petroleum, and numerous environmental and engineering consulting firms throughout the region. Our graduates are also conducting research and teaching at SUNY-Oswego, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Buffalo, and Baylor University. Opportunities for international travel and employment are also quite common.
