The University of Mines and Technology (www.umat.edu.gh) runs a
total of ninety-eight (98) programmes comprising thirty-four (34) postgraduate
degree, twenty-eight (28) undergraduate degree, three (3) diploma, and
thirty-three (33) certificate programmes. The academic activities of the
University are currently performed by five faculties and three schools, namely,
Faculty of Mining and Minerals Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of
Geosciences and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Computing and Mathematical
Sciences, Faculty of Integrated Management Science, School of Petroleum
Studies, School of Railway and Infrastructure Development, and the School of
Postgraduate Studies respectively.
About University of Mines and Technology (UMaT)
The University of Mines and Technology (www.umat.edu.gh) runs a

Undergraduate Entry Requirements
(a) SSSCE Applicants
Applicants must have passes (A-D) in THREE CORE SUBJECTS in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science AND passes (A-D) in THREE SCIENCE ELECTIVES in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or Geography as an alternative to Chemistry.
(b) WASSCE Applicants
Applicants must have credit passes (A1-C6) in THREE CORE SUBJECTS in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science AND credit passes (A1-C6) in THREE SCIENCE ELECTIVES in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or Geography as an alternative to Chemistry.
(c) GCE Advanced Level Applicants
Applicants must have passes in three (3) subjects (at least one of the passes should be grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in at least FIVE GCE ORDINARY LEVEL subjects or its equivalent including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, AND passes (Grade D or better) at GCE ADVANCED LEVEL in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or Geography as an alternative to Chemistry for non-science students.
(d)Mature Applicants
Applicants must have attained 25 years of age and have passes in FIVE SUBJECTS AT SHS LEVEL including English Language and Mathematics or credits in FIVE SUBJECTS AT GCE ORDINARY LEVEL, including English Language and Mathematics. In addition, Applicants must have relevant working experience and must pass an interview conducted by the Department.
(e ) Foreign Applicants
i. Required subjects for Science: English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Further Mathematics for Physical Sciences and a pass in one arts subject.
ii. Other Qualifications: Other qualifications acceptable for consideration for admission include International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade 13 examinations and other external qualifications, which are equivalent to the WASSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A levels).
International students whose first language is not English are required to have proficiency in English from a recognised institution before they can register on the programme.
Graduate/Postgraduate Entry Requirements
(a)MSc
i. PgD, BSc/BEng First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) or its equivalent in Engineering from a recognised University.
ii. All other applicants who do not satisfy (i) above, but have degrees in engineering and physical sciences may be eligible for admission after careful verification of certificate(s), transcripts and relevant documents.
iii. International applicants with proficiency in English language who satisfy the requirements of (i) above are eligible for admission after careful verification of certificate(s), transcripts and relevant documents.
(b) MPhil in Engineering
i. PgD, BSc/BEng First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) or its equivalent in Engineering from a recognised University.
ii. All other applicants who do not satisfy (i) above, but have degrees in engineering and physical sciences may be eligible for admission after careful verification of certificate(s), transcripts and relevant documents.
iii. International applicants with proficiency in English language who satisfy the requirements of (i) above are eligible for admission after careful verification of certificate(s), transcripts and relevant documents.
All applicants for MSc and MPhil who do not have a particular Engineering background will, upon admission, will be required to take and pass Introduction to a specific Engineering discipline module as a prerequisite for the main programme module.s
( c) PhD in Engineering
i. Applicants must have an MPhil or MSc (by research) degree in any Engineering/science discipline from a recognised University and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme.
ii. Applicants who do not hold a Master’s degree, but has a First Class BSc degree and/or PgD distinction in Engineering, shall first register for MPhil degree. If he/she proves himself to be academically capable by the end of the first year of the programme, he/she may be permitted by the Board of Postgraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Department to register for the PhD degree. This registration shall be deemed retrospective from the date of the original registration of the Master’s degree.
iii. An applicant in (ii) shall be required to pass all compulsory courses taken at the MPhil degree level and shall obtain an average minimum CWA of 75 at the end of the first year to be considered credible for the PhD programme.
iv. An applicant, who does not satisfy the requirements stated above but is otherwise adjudged suitable, may be admitted. For the purpose of assessing his/her suitability, such an applicant may be interviewed or required to take an entrance examination, or both as may be directed by the School of Postgraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Departmental Board.
v. As an additional requirement, applicants for PhD degrees must first contact a potential supervisor in the Department to discuss their proposals before applying. Applicants must submit PhD research proposals in addition to the required documents during the application stage.
