The Bachelor of Music in Performance degree at UTampa is designed for students who aspire to careers as professional musicians. Through intensive study of music in private lessons with highly-skilled professional faculty, participation in varied undergraduate-focused ensembles and frequent experiential concert opportunities, the program prepares students to enter the field as performers, ensemble conductors and music directors. Students also develop a foundation of comprehensive musicianship that prepares them for future graduate study in music or careers as private music teachers. Throughout their study, students are offered the opportunity to participate in master classes and recitals, attend guest artist/faculty recitals and become involved with the many cultural opportunities the Tampa Bay region has to offer.

  • Voice: one aria and two contrasting art songs (all memorized, in three different foreign languages); pianist provided for on-campus auditions, CD player provided if recorded accompaniment is preferred.


Piano, Organ

  • Piano: three contrasting pieces from three of the following categories: a work from the Baroque period (for example, a prelude and fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach or a sonata by D. Scarlatti); a movement from a classical sonata or concerto (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven); a 19th-century piece (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, etc.); an Impressionistic piece (Debussy or Ravel) or representative 20th-century piece
  • Organ: three pieces of contrasting style, one of which is by J.S. Bach


Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion

  • Woodwinds and Brass: grade V, VI or VII solo or first movement of a standard concerto (accompanist not required); major scales (two octaves)
  • Percussion: grade V, VI or VII solos and/or etudes demonstrating proficiency in snare drum, timpani and mallet percussion; major scales on mallets


Orchestral Strings, Harp, Classical Guitar

Area director for orchestral strings, harp, classical guitar auditions (contact for additional info): Megan Maddaleno, DMA


  • Orchestral Strings (for scholarship): a major scale (three octaves) and melodic minor scale (2 or 3 octaves); two contrasting etudes or two contrasting movements of a solo sonata or concerto. Unaccompanied pieces of rigor (Bach Sonatas and Partitas, Popper Etudes etc.) are acceptable and encouraged for higher scholarship consideration
  • Orchestral Strings (for admission): major scale (at least two octaves); one etude or one movement of a solo sonata or concerto
  • Harp: arpeggios (four octaves) in fluent tempo; one etude of Grandjany, Bochsa, Larivière, Salzedo or Pozzoli; one standard harp solo work originally written for harp
  • Classical Guitar: on a nylon-string classical guitar, perform major and minor scales; one standard classical guitar solo work; one classical guitar etude


Contemporary (Jazz/Pop/World/Electronic)

  • Electric Guitar (Contemporary Guitar): perform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); simple solo chord/melody arrangement (1-2 minutes) for a jazz standard; melody and comping (playing chords) for a 12-bar blues standard; simple sight reading in treble clef, including melody, chord symbols and rhythm
  • Keyboard/Synthesizer (Contemporary Keyboard): perform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); right-hand comping (playing chords) and left-hand walking bass over a circle of fifths progression; right-hand melody and left-hand comping for a 12-bar blues standard; simple sight reading in treble and bass clef, including melody, chord symbols and rhythm
  • Electric Bass (Contemporary Bass): perform all major and natural minor scales (two octaves); melody and walking bass line for a 12-bar blues standard; a prepared solo for electric or upright bass in a style of your choice; simple sight reading in bass clef, including bass line, chord symbols and rhythm
  • Drum Set (Contemporary Percussion): perform accompaniment patterns in several different styles: jazz, latin, rock, funk, reggae, etc.; perform a prepared, unaccompanied solo in a style of your choice; simple sight reading from drum notation
