The Master of Science in Mathematics and Science Education (M.S.M.S.E.) is a collaboration between the School of Urban Education and the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences. This program provides a solid background in mathematics and science principals for application within formal and/or informal classroom settings. The MSMSE program is designed for certified and practicing teachers and others with degrees or work experience in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) who wish to enhance their subject matter knowledge and skills in science and math disciplines. It includes a core of research courses, professional education courses and electives in math and science. The M.S.M.S.E. students are required to complete a final research or capstone project on a STEM topic. Purpose: Enhance subject matter knowledge and literacy in science, math and/or technology Develop practicing scholars of educational research related to STEM topics Collaborate with faculty in the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences to meet academic and career needs of students Learning Objectives The M.S.M.S.E. program seeks to: Develop the student’s ability to think critically and speak and write clearly in STEM areas Promote science and math literacy in the K-12 classroom and society through project-based courses and experiences Provide opportunities for career advancement for current and future educators Create an individual plan of study in which coursework, the capstone STEM research project and faculty in the School of Urban Education in a science/math discipline will help students develop the skills and dispositions for lifelong learning.
