The Master's in Classics and Ancient Civilizations (CAC) offers you the opportunity to become an expert in the literature and societies of the Ancient Mediterranean.

Two tracks: Classics and Ancient Civilizations

Both our tracks offer you a world-class, interdisciplinary education. If you choose the track Classics, you will receive excellent training in Greek and Latin language and literature from Homer to Late Antiquity, including linguistics, intertextuality, narratology and reception. If you choose the track Ancient Studies, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural and religious worlds of Ancient Greece, Rome and the Near East.

The Master CAC is offered jointly by VU and the UvA – combining their expertise in the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA).

Students must meet the following admission requirements:

1. Academic requirements

Your previous education needs to be deemed equivalent to at least a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree ( wetenschappelijk onderwijs, WO ) obtained at a research university (nominal duration 3 years). 

2. Programme specific requirements

As a student in the Master’s programme in Classics and Ancient Civilizations you are expected to have the following knowledge, insight and skills:

  • You are able to conduct research independently and know how to formulate consistent and functional research questions, collect data, apply theory, and write a thesis;

  • You are familiar with the interpretation of literary and historical texts as well as material culture from an interdisciplinary perspective;

  • You are deeply interested in the languages, history and material culture of the ancient world;

  • You wish to participate in and contribute to a vibrant teaching and research community

To be admitted into the MA programme Classics and Ancient Civilizations; track Classics you are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Greek and Latin language and culture (in the original language).

  • a similiar BA programme with at least the equivalent of 90 EC in Greek and Latin language and literature modules (in the original language).

To be admitted into the MA programme Classics and Ancient Civilizations; track Ancient Studies you are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines:

    • Classics (Griekse en Latijnse Taal en Cultuur); 

    • Ancient Studies (Oudheidwetenschappen);

    • History with Ancient History as specialization;

    • Archaeology; 

    • Religious Studies;

    • Assyriology;

    • Philosophy;

    • A similar degree programme with a relevant specialization

  • the ability to carry out a survey of primary sources (literary or material) and secondary literature and to derive from this a 'status quaestionis'.

3. English-language proficiency requirements
