The central questions of life - How should I act? What is life all about? Is there a God? - these questions and others as fundamental and challenging – lie at the heart of the new Ethics, Religion and Philosophy pathway. Studying the central problems in philosophical ethics, value and religion will equip you to explore and think critically about a variety of responses to the big questions of life, how it should be lived, and how we should relate to the crucial issues that face us all. Sharing the foundational units of the first year with other philosophy students, the second year will provide you with a more in-depth study of contemporary issues in ethics and the philosophy of religion. Units like Virtues and Values and Philosophy of Religion will be accompanied by reflections of Nietzsche’s famous dictum that God is Dead, which has animated a significant part of 20th Century theology, while other units reflect on the contemporary problem of the relation between science and religion. The third year will intensify these studies by means of a specialist Dissertation, studying Theism and Paganism: Philosophy of Religion II and reflecting on Bioethics and Moral Dilemmas along with other options. * This course is undergoing a review over the next year which may mean a change to the course title and units of study.
