The degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science is conferred on all students who complete this program. Students whose major concentration is applied mathematics, applied physics, astrophysics, biochemistry, biology, biopsychology, chemical physics, chemistry, cognitive and brain Sciences, computer science, engineering psychology, environmental studies (as second major only), geological sciences, geology, mathematics, and physics are eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. Those majoring in psychology, psychology/clinical and quantitative economics may choose to receive the degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts at the time they complete their degree sheet. Students in all other majors will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students whose multiple majors make them eligible for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree may choose between the two when completing their degree sheet. Italian Studies The Japanese program offers a solid foundation in the Japanese language. It also introduces students to many facets of Japanese culture, covering ancient, medieval, modern, and postmodern periods. Our focus is primarily on literature, film, popular culture, and anime. We enjoy close links with International Literary and Visual Studies and with International Relations. Our major prepares students for careers not only in academics but also in business, law, diplomacy, or technology, where the knowledge of Japanese language and culture is a valuable asset. For those interested in teaching careers, we offer a teaching internship which leads to a provisional education certificate. The major in Japanese requires nine courses beyond Japanese 4, plus one in a related field. Those who place out of Japanese language courses still need to complete ten approved courses: Language requirement: four courses beyond Japanese 4; continuation to Japanese 123, 124 strongly recommended. Japanese 61 and four additional literature/culture courses from the Japanese offerings in the department. Two of these courses must be at the 100 level, including one seminar. If qualified, a student may opt to do an Honors Thesis (Japanese 198, 199) instead of a seminar. Only one course with a half Japanese content, such as JPN 84, can count toward the major. 0ne course in Japanese culture offered by another department and approved by the program director.
