A degree in history develops skills in analysis and writing that can lead to careers in many fields, such as education, government and law, but also medicine or the sciences. Small course sizes and faculty dedicated to undergraduate education create a favorable environment for intellectual exploration. The Foundation Seminar, research seminars and the possibility for independent study provide the building blocks for students interested in writing a senior thesis. The thesis exchange during the Senior year is a forum for students to develop their projects and learn from their colleagues. Learning Objectives Students graduating from Tufts University with a BA in History will meet the following learning outcomes: Mastery of common historical research methods Ability to identify, locate, access and effectively use both primary and secondary sources in research projects Ability to demonstrate, both orally and in writing: An in-depth knowledge of at least one historical field Understanding of chronology and causation, continuity and change. Knowledge of the historical contexts that influence cultures and ideas. Knowledge of, and appreciation for, regions and cultures other than their own Knowledge of, and appreciation for, global diversity and interdependence Ability to construct an original and plausible historical argument and craft a narrative that is a) grounded in both primary and secondary source information, and b) logically and convincingly supports that argument. Ability to think critically and analytically about historical themes. Ability to clearly and effectively convey historical information orally and in writing.

Founded in 1852, Tufts University is recognized among the premier universities in the United States, known for its rigorous and innovative research and educational programs. Tufts enjoys a global reputation for academic excellence and for the preparation of students as leaders in a wide range of professions. The Carnegie Foundation has recognized Tufts as an “R1” research university with “very high research activity” based on the breadth of basic and clinical research conducted in its eight schools.  Tufts has extensive and highly regarded liberal arts, sciences and engineering programs that draw outstanding students from around the world with the highest academic achievement and standing. More than 98 percent of enrolling students expect to pursue graduate or professional study after completion of a bachelor’s degree. All of Tufts’ schools have a strong international component. Approximately 50 percent of all undergraduates attending Tufts pursue coursework outside the United States to add a strong international dimension to their field of study. Tufts believes that teaching and research are intimately related, and students are encouraged to take part in independent research and scholarship. Above all, Tufts emphasizes that learning and research should be in the service of society, and civic engagement, spearheaded by the Tisch College of Civic Life, is part of almost every aspect and endeavor at the University.
