The degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science is conferred on all students who complete this program. Students whose major concentration is applied mathematics, applied physics, astrophysics, biochemistry, biology, biopsychology, chemical physics, chemistry, cognitive and brain Sciences, computer science, engineering psychology, environmental studies (as second major only), geological sciences, geology, mathematics, and physics are eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. Those majoring in psychology, psychology/clinical and quantitative economics may choose to receive the degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts at the time they complete their degree sheet. Students in all other majors will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students whose multiple majors make them eligible for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree may choose between the two when completing their degree sheet. Music has an essential role in a liberal arts college education. It draws upon disciplines such as the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, sciences and engineering. Musical studies teach transferable skills of value for careers in the professions and business. Students who study music in college prepare themselves for a lifetime appreciation of the musical arts. The Department of Music offers courses in the disciplines of composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, performance, and theory. Our curriculum is inclusive and diverse, with emphasis on the traditions of western classical music, American music (especially African-American music and jazz), and world music (especially African and Asian music). We enthusiastically endorse individual study of instrumental and vocal performance and participation in performing ensembles; students may earn academic credit for these musical activities. Tufts Department of Music has a distinguished legacy as one of the most comprehensive, inclusive, and connected programs in the country. At Tufts, you will encounter and study Western music and World music traditions from a multi-disciplinary perspective including music theory, composition, historical musicology, and ethnomusicology. We believe that hands-on performance is central to understanding music and sharing its power. Through private lessons and ensemble participation, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform in Western and World music traditions and to further develop your own creative musical personality. In the spirit of Tufts' emphasis on civic engagement and global citizenship, the Department of Music provides opportunities for its students to connect with others globally and locally through a curriculum that encourages fieldwork, outreach activities, and community activism. Students graduating with a Major in Music will have developed: An appreciation for the aesthetic, intellectual, and ideological complexity of musical works, musical performance and composition, and the role and function of music in culture and society; A capacity for historical, analytical, theoretical, and critical thinking and writing concerning a broad range of musical styles and traditions; An ability to engage with music through solo and ensemble performance; The skills necessary to bring to fruition a substantial project in scholarly research, performance, or composition.
