Studying abroad means meeting strict English proficiency requirements, and knowing which tests are accepted by both universities and visa authorities

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a widely accepted, remote English test, recognised by thousands of universities and widely supported in student visa processes in the major study abroad destinations, including the United States, Canada, UK and Canada.

With its remote format and fast results, the DET is reshaping international admissions. But where exactly is it accepted, and how does it factor into student visa requirements?

Below, we break down which study destinations you can access with a Duolingo English Test score

United States

The United States sets a high bar for university admissions, and the DET is now recognised by nearly all major institutions.

Ivy League universities – think HarvardYalePrinceton and Stanford – welcome DET scores for their undergraduate programmes.

Graduate schools, too, are increasingly on board, with close to 80 percent of America’s top graduate programmes accepting the test.

Popular schools include:

While the DET isn’t a formal requirement for the US government’s F-1 student visa, it can play a crucial role in your application if your chosen school accepts it. In these instances, DET is sufficient proof of English proficiency and no further test is required.

Ultimately, your spoken English skills – showcased during the visa interview – and how well you communicate is what matters the most.

Canada

The Duolingo English Test is accepted by 450+ programmes across Canada, including every English-speaking U15 university (Canada’s top public universities) and the top 10 universities with the most international students. Popular undergrad programmes include:

The visa process is similarly accommodating: the DET is valid for Canada’s standard study permit application.

With changes to the Student Direct Stream, there’s no longer a preference for the IELTS over the DET, giving you greater flexibility in choosing the best test for your circumstances.

United Kingdom

In the UK, the DET is welcomed by renowned universities. So far, the DET is accepted by over 320 programmes, including:

Once you’re accepted by a DET-endorsing university where English is the medium of instruction, your visa process is simplified – no need for additional language proof.

However, for some specific visa categories, the government requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT), for which DET currently doesn’t qualify.

For the majority of student visa applicants, though, this is not an obstacle.

Ireland

Ireland has solidified its DET-friendly reputation, with almost all universities – fifteen out of eighteen – embracing the test.

Top schools include:

The Irish student visa authorities officially recognise the DET, making it a seamless choice for those keen to experience the Emerald Isle’s vibrant academic scene.

New Zealand

For those drawn to New Zealand’s celebrated universities, the DET is a recognised pathway. Popular programmes for both undergraduate and postgraduate include:

The country’s fee-paying student visa, which allows you to study for up to four years, does not demand additional English proficiency documentation provided your chosen institution accepts the DET.

Australia

Australian universities are increasingly accepting the DET. Top programmes include:

Some, such as Monash University, offer Duolingo English Test acceptance for their foundation courses.

However, visa requirements in Australia are more nuanced, with rules varying depending on your nationality and the specific study programme.

In certain cases, a physical test-centre exam may still be required, so be sure to consult official guidelines before applying.

The DET is designed for university applicants around the world

With official recognition from thousands of top universities and compatibility with most student visa applications, the DET stands out as a flexible, forward-thinking route for international students.

While some nations retain specific visa policies and quirks, the overall trend is unmistakable: the Duolingo English Test is fast becoming a global standard.

If you’re planning to study abroad in 2025, exploring the DET could be your first step to unlocking world-class educational opportunities – and embarking on the journey of a lifetime.
