Completing a PhD or a Master of Science by Research (MScR) with us is an exciting and fulfilling experience, and will become a defining period of your life.


Research degree students in the Department of Engineering are supported by a supervisory team of academics, internationally recognised experts in their fields, to guide their training and research direction throughout their programme.  You will also be part of one of our Research Nodes – thematic groupings of academics, researchers and PGR students providing critical research mass.


PhD Course Code H1A201: Usually three and a half years of full-time or six years of part-time research and writing, at the end of which students produce a thesis of up to 100,000 words. This programme is particularly suitable for students who wish to pursue a career in research in an industry or academic setting.

Good 2.1 (or higher) Honours degree in a relevant engineering discipline or computer science as appropriate; English language requirements include an IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent.
