The chemistry department at Durham is one of the leading departments in the UK (5th in the Complete University Guide, 9th in the Times and 10th in the Guardian 2026 Chemistry league tables).
When you choose to study for a BSc degree you will join a dynamic and focused learning community that is home to multiple research institutes, a range of first-class facilities and experts with close industry links. Current developments in both research and industry are used to bring theoretical learning to life.
Chemistry degrees at Durham offer a high level of flexibility. The BSc in Chemistry follows the same curriculum in Years 1 and 2 as our other chemistry degrees, and you can switch to one of the other degrees up to the end of the second year.
You will learn how chemistry is the central science with learning that interfaces with biosciences, earth sciences, engineering, and physics. You will be exposed to cutting-edge analytical techniques and learn how they can be used in research to tackle global issues. Graduates are ready to either move straight into employment in a wide range of industries or advance into further studies and scientific research.

The University is committed to continuous improvement and is currently undertaking a review to enhance our courses. As we make updates, some details of courses advertised for 2027 entry may change. These enhancements are being developed in consultation with students and in response to student feedback. We will not be making changes to degree subjects, academic standards or the broad concepts that will be taught, but to how courses are organised. In some cases this may mean that the balance of compulsory and optional modules may change. Any updates will be communicated transparently and by the end of summer 2026, ensuring applicants know exactly what to expect from their chosen degree.

Home students who do not meet our direct entry requirements may be eligible for our Foundation Programme which offers multidisciplinary programmes to prepare you for a range of specified degree programmes.
