We welcome applications for students wishing to study for a PhD, or to undertake an MA by Research.

As an MLAC research student you will be invited to participate in dedicated postgraduate research seminars where you can discuss your work and share your experiences with other students. Moreover you will have the opportunity to attend staff seminars and lectures by major figures in modern language research.

Language Support

If English is not your first language there is excellent language support available, provided by our English Language Centre.

The School of Modern Languages & Cultures functions as a single unit for research, gathering our eight language areas (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Japanese and Russian) and Translation Studies, working within and across these to enable interdisciplinary investigations. Four areas of particular strength characterise our research activities:

  • Medieval & Early Modern Studies
  • Digital, Environmental & Medical Humanities
  • Translation
  • Visual & Performance Studies

We welcome applications for postgraduate study in the School’s Language & Research Focus Areas, especially where there are potential links to relevant Research Institutes and Centres or to our Research Groups.

Our Masters programmes give graduates an excellent chance of success in the competitive graduate labour market. Recent destinations have included:

  • Junior Translation Project Manager (Durham Translators)
  • Systems Analyst (Fairbanks Limited)
  • Multi-Lingual Translation Checker (RWS)
  • International Translator (SDL)
  • Games Localisation Tester (Testronics Labs)
  • Gallery Curator (Impressions)
