The study of philosophy examines the basic and ultimate questions of human life including, but not limited to: what is real? what is knowledge? what is good? and what is beauty? Our philosophy program is at the very heart of the Iona College mission of fostering intellectual inquiry and developing graduates who will be recognized for their ethical sensibilities, creativity, and independent thinking. Whether you take philosophy courses as part of your undergraduate core requirements or choose to major or minor in philosophy, you will work with dedicated professors and scholars who will prepare you to grapple with and understand some of the most profound ideas of the ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary worlds. Our courses explore issues in the history of philosophy, which form the intellectual foundations that continue to shape our personal and professional lives. In the process, our students develop and hone their critical, analytical, and evaluative skills. Our major program offers rigorous preparation for advanced studies in philosophy, and provides a superb foundation for students pursuing graduate study in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. Career paths of recent alumni Academics Law Computer Science Political Science Enhancing study in other disciplines Philosophy classes provide the occasion for critical reading, writing, and problem solving. Philosophy coursework dovetails with other academic disciplines, complementing and enhancing study in fields such as law, business, religion, mathematics, politics, the fine arts, literature, and the natural and social sciences. For example, courses in logic, the philosophy of law, and the ethics of science, technology, and business prepare students for careers in their chosen fields. Philosophy in the Honors Program The Philosophy Department holds a particularly strong place in the Iona College Honors Program, which offers honors students the resources and opportunities to develop their talents and to perform at the peak of their capabilities. The Humanities and Logic courses in the Honors Program are specifically designed to develop intellectual curiosity, analytic abilities, and awareness of ethical and civic responsibilities. Philosophy is central to these endeavors. Student Outcomes After a student has taken any philosophy course, he or she should be able to do the following: Define key terms concerning the subject matter of the course. Explain various approaches to the study of the subject matter of the course. Understand how the subject matter of this philosophy course is different from the subject matters of other courses. Understand the scope and range of the subject matter of the course. Have some idea of the historical perspective of the subject matter of the course. Understand why the subject matter of the course is significant to one's life.
