Iona?s Mathematics programs will prepare you to make an impact in some of today?s most challenging fields?and move your own career forward in the direction that interests you. In addition to gaining a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques, you?ll develop the logical and analytical thinking skills that will enable you to become a valued problem-solver within a broad range of industries. The Mathematics Department has a proven track record when it comes to job placement. An opportunity to study broadly and deeply Iona?s mathematics curriculum emphasizes the three major fields of study, algebra, analysis and applied mathematics, while giving students the chance to delve more deeply into an area of personal interest. All courses within the major are taught by full-time faculty, not teaching assistants, as is the case at many other schools. Iona?s commitment to small class sizes ensures that you will benefit from personalized attention that is paramount to student success. Students graduating Iona College with Mathematics major will be able to: demonstrate the ability to identify articles that draw conclusions based on mathematical results and reasoning. demonstrate the ability to transition between the written English word and its equivalent mathematical notation. successfully apply mathematical techniques/definitions when solving problems. use technology when appropriate. explore mathematical algorithms used as tools for solving problems and drawing conclusions. prove statements using appropriate methods such as direct proof, method of contradiction, and mathematical induction. recognize and correct incorrect or incomplete proofs. model real-world situations using appropriate analytic/graphical/numeric methods. recognize the need to test conclusions and models drawn from real-world data. recognize and correct inappropriate solution methods/models.
