In the South and Southeast Asian programme you gain a thorough understanding of the history, cultures, politics and languages of the region, home to almost a third of the world's population (and two-thirds of its Muslims) and some of the world's fastest-growing economies. Relevant contemporary issues such as ethnic and religious conflicts, inequality and development, the surge in cultural and political movements and the tensions between modernity and tradition are addressed in lectures and seminars.

Your degree in South and Southeast Asian Studies makes you an attractive candidate for a variety of potential employers. This is due to your knowledge of a large area and the academic skills you will have acquired. You could, for instance, work as a researcher, consultant, curator or P&O staff member.

As a student of South and Southeast Asian Studies, you can expect a full working week of about 40 hours. You will spend an average of 14 hours in-class, for example lectures or tutorials, and the rest of the time on independent study. You attend lectures focused upon a particular topic; the lectures are complemented by tutorials in which the material is discussed in greater depth and with more student input, for example in solo or group presentations.
With your bachelor’s degree you’re more than a specialist in South and Southeast Asia. Alongside your subject expertise, you’ve developed a broad set of academic skills that give you a strong start to your career. Graduates often find roles where communication, advising, organising and teaching play a central role. There are a surprising number of directions you can take after completing your studies.
