The MSc degree guarantees thorough research experience with a profound theoretical basis. This research orientation in the programme is unique in Europe and enjoys a highly international profile. The strength of the programme is its individual approach: for each student an individually tailored programme will be designed.
The core of the programme is ‘research-based learning’ and developing a critical, inquisitive and self-reflective attitude and the skills to systematically analyse scientific issues. A major part of the programme involves active participation in ongoing research projects at LACDR; facilitated by intensive coaching during an internship covering all aspects of the research cycle, including a research thesis/oral presentation. In the second year students may choose a research-related specialisation
Students are trained for a research career in drug research and development, not for a career as a (public) pharmacist. Most graduates proceed to a PhD training at Leiden University or another university. Graduates from the LACDR are in great demand in the pharmaceutical industry and in other research institutes. An extensive worldwide network of research contacts allows students to obtain research experience abroad during their MSc or PhD studies.

English language requirements: IELTS 6.5, minimum 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 for each of the components Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking; TOEFL internet-based 90, internet based 90 (with a minimum component score of 20); Cambridge English 180, Cambridge English Exam C2 Proficiency, or C1 Advanced with an overall score of 180, with a minimum of 169 for each individual subsection; Cambridge English 180, Cambridge English Exam C2 Proficiency, or C1 Advanced with an overall score of 180, with a minimum of 169 for each individual subsection.
Studying abroad is optional within our master programme, but we strongly encourage our students to gain international experience and there is a very convenient opportunity for that during the second year of the Research specialisation.
