Michigan Tech offers both Master of Science and PhD degrees in Biological Sciences, as well as an option in medical laboratory management for those pursuing the MS degree. Research focuses in this department include: biochemistry and molecular biology, bioinformatics, and exercise science; ecology and environmental biology, evolutionary studies, invasive species, and fish biology; human health, medical microbiology, immunology, diabetes, regulation of arterial blood pressure. Our research facilities include the equipment needed to support graduate students in performing cutting edge research. From GC- and ICP- mass spectrometers to various chromatography systems (HLPC, IC, GC, etc...) used for chemical analyses, resources are also available for water testing, DNA sequencing, nanotech research and the physiological monitoring of human and environmental processes. Medical technologists may pursue a master’s degree in biological sciences with an option in medical laboratory management. The medical lab management option within the MS program balances science and business. MLS (ASCP) certificate is required.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School as a degree seeking student, the applicant must be the recipient of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, adequately prepared for advanced study in the chosen field of specialization, as demonstrated by the previous program of study and the scholastic record. Other English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): minimum 550 PBT, Eiken STEP: minimum P1 (for Japanese applicants; includes speaking portion; score of 2A=ESL, P2=low beginner, 1=accept for grad); MELAB: minimum 77 (average of scores on parts 1, 2, and 3) US and Canada test sites only; Pearson Test of English: 53.
