Michigan Tech’s graduate program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) provides cutting-edge education, training students to work as GIS specialists and managers. A strong foundation in core geospatial principles is provided, as well as interdisciplinary study in statistics, communications, environmental policy, and business. The Master of Geographic Information Science (MGIS) is designed to allow students with bachelor's degrees in any discipline to apply. Current Michigan Tech undergraduate students can earn an MGIS degree with just a single year of study beyond the BS through the Accelerated Master's Program. The MGIS is a professional degree rather than a traditional Master of Science (MS) degree, and is designed to prepare students for a career as a geospatial professional. The uses of GIS technology are broad and cross many disciplines, including demographics, epidemiology, law enforcement and homeland security, natural resources, public health, and urban and regional planning. GIS is often associated with mapmaking, but geospatial professionals do much more. Responsibilities can include cartographic design, database management, programming, and system administration.
