The computer engineering program focuses on the conception, analysis, design, integration, and evaluation of embedded systems, computing networking, and high-assurance systems employing modern microprocessor and microcontroller devices. Research goals within the department are to improve the performance and reliability of existing devices, as well as designing new systems around them. Current Michigan Tech undergraduate students can earn a MS degree with just a single year of study beyond the BS through the Accelerated Master's Program. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering also offers programs with concentrations in energy systems, information systems, and solid-state electronics.

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School as a degree seeking student, the applicant must be the recipient of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, adequately prepared for advanced study in the chosen field of specialization, as demonstrated by the previous program of study and the scholastic record. Other English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): minimum 550 PBT, Eiken STEP: minimum P1 (for Japanese applicants; includes speaking portion; score of 2A=ESL, P2=low beginner, 1=accept for grad); MELAB: minimum 77 (average of scores on parts 1, 2, and 3) US and Canada test sites only; Pearson Test of English: 53.
