Students in Michigan Tech’s Master of Science in Environmental and Energy Policy program gain skills in policy analysis and an understanding of socio-environmental systems. The program offers an innovative approach to environmental management through the collaboration of faculty in ecology, engineering, economics, other social sciences, and forest resources. It is distinctive for its training in citizen participation and its interdisciplinary emphasis. Michigan Tech's program is small and focused, which permits us to be flexible and to work intensively with each of our graduate students. Current research focus includes the policy dimensions of a variety of natural resource and environmental problems, including the development of wind energy, community forestry in Nepal, and community-based recycling programs. We are currently working on research on the development of biofuels, the impact of mining on ecological systems, and the history of the management of nitrogen resources and pollution. Many of us are working on solutions to climate change, analysis of the effectiveness of pollution reduction policies, and community based risk perceptions.

As an undergraduate student at Michigan Tech, it’s simple: if you want to do research, you can. Real research—the kind that creates solutions for industry, gets patented (sometimes with your name on it!), or addresses the problems of our modern world. Last year, our undergraduates spent 126,000 hours working on paid research. We’re ranked among the top twenty universities in the US in the proportion of research that’s sponsored by industry. And nearly 25 percent of our invention disclosures include the names of students as inventors. Students also get published in scientific journals, present at national conferences, and interact with scientists and entrepreneurs from around the world.

Graduate programs at Michigan Tech have rigorous academic requirements set by the Graduate School. The links on this page detail these requirements, procedures to complete a graduate degree, and forms required to track your progress. Graduate programs may have additional requirements for students.
